Taking attendance in ten seconds
This guide is for any school, with or without Martialnote. It describes a method that works, and what makes it fail.
The principle: during class, not after
The reason attendance gets lost is that it is copied up after class, when you are tired and have already turned the page. The method that holds is simple: the sheet is open before the students arrive, and it is filled during the warm-up. What is not done in ten seconds will not be done at all.
- Open the sheet before the first student.
- Fill it during the warm-up, not after.
- Confirm in one go, at the end of class.
Put the regulars first
A sheet sorted alphabetically makes you search. A sheet that puts first those who usually come to that class almost fills itself: most of the expected students are already in the first rows. Visitors and newcomers come next, and that is where the extra few seconds go.
- Regulars of the class first.
- Visitors and newcomers next.
- Students from other groups at the end.
Three states, no more
Each student is present, late, or absent for an excused reason. Multiplying states — arrived early, left before the end, injured — makes the sheet long to fill and nobody uses them afterwards. What really matters is telling a real visit from an absence, because that is what feeds subscription counts and the tracking of students drifting away.
- Present, late, excused.
- A simple state gets filled quickly.
- The real visit is what counts for dues.
The mistakes that cost time
Looking for a connection, waiting until everyone has arrived, or wanting to record everything perfectly the first time: that is what makes people give up. A sheet filled in 90% during class beats a perfect sheet never filled at all. If the room has no network, the app keeps the work locally and syncs later.
Questions
What if I forget to take attendance?
Catch the session up the next day. In Martialnote, an instructor can edit the last seven days.
Do I have to fill everything before class ends?
No. The sheet saves along the way; what matters is starting during class.
Try the sheet in the app
The regulars are already in place when the session opens, and the sheet works with no network.
Free to start, no credit card. You can change everything later.
