Martialnote

What your subscription covers

When a school goes above 25 active students, it pays a subscription. Here is what that money does, without jargon — and what it does not do.

Hosting the app and keeping copies

Running Martialnote means a server, a database, and an encrypted copy of everything, every day, kept somewhere other than where the app runs. A full restore is tried at least once a quarter, on an empty database, to check that the copy is actually useful. A backup that was never tested is not a backup.

  • A dedicated server and database, not shared with other products.
  • An encrypted daily copy, kept off the server.
  • A full restore tried at least once a quarter.

Keeping each school apart

Each school is locked inside its own envelope, within the database itself: a badly filtered query cannot show another school's students, even by accident. This is not a courtesy promise, it is the shape of the data — and tests try to cross the border on every release.

  • Separation enforced by the database, not by app code.
  • A badly filtered query cannot cross over.
  • Tests try to cross the border on every release.

Protecting children's information

Many schools enrol minors, and their information is handled with the same care as adults'. For a child, the app keeps no email or phone of their own: it goes through the parent or guardian. The privacy policy says plainly what is kept, why, and for how long.

  • No contact details of a child's own.
  • Messages go through the parent or guardian.
  • What is kept, and for how long, is written in plain words.

Letting your data leave whenever you want

A full export of the school is a feature of the app, not a favour: every table, in a workbook or a file archive, without asking anyone and without waiting for the end of a billing month. That is what makes the subscription honest: we have to earn your trust every month, not hold you back by making it hard to leave.

  • A full export, on request, in one gesture.
  • No condition, no delay, no justification.
  • The same export for a free school as for a paying one.

Continuing to improve the app

The subscription also pays for the time spent fixing and improving Martialnote: fixes arrive at no extra cost, and new features are included. What has been delivered recently is published in plain words, month by month, on the what's new page — you can see where the money goes.

  • Fixes, at no extra cost.
  • New features, included.
  • What has been delivered, published every month.

A flat rate that does not depend on your size

The amount does not move when the school grows, and it does not punish a school that shrinks: below 25 active students, it becomes free again, without losing anything. A school with 300 students pays the same as a school with 30. That is the model, and it is what makes the bill predictable from one year to the next.

  • The same amount from 30 to 300 students.
  • Back below 25 active students: free again, losing nothing.
  • A predictable bill, from one year to the next.

Questions

Is anything reserved for paying schools?

No. Paying schools have exactly the same features as free schools: no cap on students, groups, instructors or ranks. The only difference is the number of active students, and that is a billing trigger, not a limit — nothing closes, before or after.

Why does my school pay, when it does not need more?

Because the app keeps running, being backed up, fixed and improved. A school that does not need more pays so that the service exists — for itself as much as for others.

Can what I pay go up without warning?

Any change to the regular rate is announced by email at least 30 days in advance. The founder rate does not change: it is locked for life, monthly or yearly.
