Progression
Screens: Progression (menu, /progression, titled Curriculums), {name}’s progression (/students/:id/progression), the Progression view of the attendance sheet, the Progression block of a student's card.
Who: the owner and the instructor see and record everything. Only the owner creates and edits curriculums.
Progression tracks where each student stands: what they learned, what was validated, class notes and milestones. It is entirely optional: a school can keep a journal of notes without creating a single curriculum.
Curriculum
A curriculum is the ordered list of forms, techniques or weapons of one discipline (e.g. "Tai chi", "Kids kung fu"). It is optional; a school can have one per discipline, or none.
- The name is unique, ignoring upper/lower case, among curriculums that are not in the trash ("A curriculum already has this name."). Restoring a curriculum can fail for the same reason: rename the other one first.
- A curriculum holds items (name, optional description) and, if wanted, categories (optional) that group items (e.g. "Empty-hand forms", "Weapons").
- Order: first the items without a category, then each category in its order, and within each the items by position. This order is used to compute "Up next".
- An item can change category; it is then placed at the end of the new one.
The owner manages curriculums
- Open Progression (menu). The Curriculums screen lists curriculums with "N item(s)" and the attached groups. Tap Add a curriculum to create one (New curriculum > Name > Save).
- Tap a curriculum to open it: Add an item, Add a category, or tap an item or category to Edit it.
- Change the order: categories move with Move up / Move down. Items also move with these arrows, or by dragging the ≡ handle.
- Move to trash: a curriculum, a category or an item. Trashing a category also hides its items (they come back with it when it is restored). The message "… moved to the trash" offers Restore for a few seconds; afterwards use Restore from the Trash for 30 days. After 30 days, the category is permanently deleted together with all its items and those items' statuses; they do not reappear "without a category". To keep an item, move it to another category (or "No category") before trashing the category, or restore the category before the 30 days are up.
The instructor opens the same screens view only ("View only: the owner creates and edits curriculums."). No edit buttons are shown.
Attaching a curriculum to a group
In the group's form (Groups), the Curriculum field (optional; "None" by default) attaches at most one curriculum to the group. The group's students then follow it. Several groups can share the same curriculum. Only the owner can do this.
Which curriculums a student follows
A student follows: the curriculums of their current groups, plus those added by hand (Follow a curriculum), minus those removed (Stop following).
- Stop following a curriculum inherited from a group applies to this student only: the group keeps it and so do the other students. The removal stays in effect even if the student leaves and rejoins the group.
- Follow adds a curriculum for this student only. The label shows the origin: "Followed through one of their groups" or "Added for this student".
- Automatic addition: in a curriculum the student does not follow, the student starts following it (added for this student) when you: mark an item (Learned or Validated); write a note tied to that curriculum, with or without an item; or edit a note to tie it to that curriculum (or one of its items).
- A note without a curriculum goes into the journal and adds no curriculum. In the Note sheet, a note alone (no item ticked) in a curriculum the student does not follow is saved without a curriculum: it does not make the student follow it.
- Statuses and notes of a curriculum no longer followed are kept and remain visible under Other curricula. Marking an item makes the student follow it again.
- A curriculum moved to the trash detaches nothing: the link with the group returns when it is restored.
Statuses: Learned and Validated
On the progression screen, each item has two buttons.
- Learned: the student knows the item. Validated: someone has checked it. Validated does not require "Learned" first.
- Tapping a button records the status with today's date (the school's time zone). Tapping the date lets you change it. The date can never be in the future ("The date cannot be in the future.").
- Tapping the active button again removes the status.
- Up next: the first item without a status, in curriculum order. An item learned out of order does not move "Up next". A trashed item is never "Up next". When everything is learned: "The whole curriculum is learned".
- Last learned: the item with the most recent learning date, with "… ago" ("today", "1 day ago", "3 days ago", "3 weeks ago", "14 months ago", "2 years ago"). Rule: days below 14 days, weeks below 9 weeks, months below 24 months, years beyond (so never "1 year").
- The statuses of a trashed item are kept and return when it is restored.
Notes and milestones (journal)
The Journal of the progression screen lists notes and milestones, most recent first.
- Add a note: text of at most 2,000 characters, with an optional curriculum and optional item, and a Date (today by default, never in the future). The author and today's date are added automatically.
- Add a milestone: a Title of at most 120 characters and an optional note. A milestone marks an honorary distinction or a ceremony (e.g. "Year-end demonstration"). It is not a grade: for belts or grades, use a grade system (Grades article).
- Edit an entry or move it to the trash: its author or the owner only. An instructor cannot edit someone else's note.
- A trashed note or milestone is restored with Restore (a few seconds) then Restore from the Trash for 30 days (type "Note or milestone"). After 30 days it is deleted for good.
Attendance sheet: Progression view and "Note"
At the top of the attendance sheet, a switch offers Attendance and Progression.
- Attendance is the usual view and works offline. The Progression view needs a connection ("The Progression view needs a connection. Attendance works without one: go back to "Attendance" to take it.").
- The Progression view shows one card per student: Last learned and "… ago", Up next, the Not for a long time badge (nothing learned for 90 days or more) and the Last note. Regulars come first, then other students only if they are marked present (a student who follows the curriculum but is neither a regular nor present has no card).
- A student who does not follow the class's curriculum shows "Not following this curriculum" and an Add button (the student then follows the curriculum).
- If the class has no curriculum attached, each card shows only the last note and Note.
- In the Attendance view, a small pencil on each tile opens Note without changing attendance.
Recording what was shown
- Tap Note (card or pencil). The Note — {name} sheet opens.
- Curriculum: by default, the first of the class's curriculums that the student follows (otherwise the class's first curriculum). If the student follows several of the class's curriculums, buttons let you choose among them. If they follow one or none and the class has several, the Other curriculum… link under the curriculum's name offers all of the class's curriculums (title "Curricula of this class").
- Shown today: the "Up next" item is already ticked if the student follows this curriculum. If not, "Up next" is offered unticked and the sheet opens on Just a note. Tick another item, or tap Other item… to pick one. Ticking an item of a curriculum the student does not follow shows "Not following this curriculum: will be added to it": on saving, the student starts following it.
- Mark as: Learned (default), Validated or Just a note. A note alone requires text; otherwise the Note (optional) is free.
- Tap Save. The message "Noted for {name}" appears.
Today's date and the author are added automatically. To mark "Up next" as Learned: Note then Save, that is 2 taps.
Note never lowers a status: marking Learned an item already Validated keeps Validated and its date (the note, if any, is saved). To set an item back from Validated to Learned, use the buttons on the {name}’s progression screen.
Student card and student progression screen
- The student's card has a Progression block: for each followed curriculum, Last learned, Up next and Last note; "No curriculum followed." otherwise. View progression opens the {name}’s progression screen (back arrow to the card).
- That screen lists, per curriculum, the items with their Learned / Validated buttons and "N of M", then Other curricula, Follow a curriculum ("This student already follows every curriculum of the school." when none is left), Stop following, Add a note, Add a milestone and the Journal ("No notes or milestones yet.").
School vocabulary
The help of a student's progression and of the attendance sheet's Progression view contains the sentence "{Teachers} can validate {forms} and add stripes.", written with the school's chosen vocabulary (for example "Professors can validate katas…"). The owner sets it in Settings > School > Vocabulary. Only this sentence and items created afterwards by the starter template change; existing items are never renamed. See the Setup article.
Student in the trash
When a student is moved to the trash, their progression (statuses, notes, milestones) is hidden with them and returns when they are restored. It is deleted for good with them after 30 days. Their notes do not appear separately in the Trash.
Roles

Grades
A curriculum can have an optional grade system (belts, sashes, kyu/dan, stripes, requirements): Grades card of the curriculum screen. Items can then be attached to a grade (Level), and a student's progression shows their current grade, next grade and grades obtained. See the Grades article.
Limits
See limites. Progression is not shared with parents, there is no student portal, and no videos or attachments.
Possible errors
"The date cannot be in the future.", "A curriculum already has this name.", "This curriculum no longer exists: it may have been moved to the trash." (likewise for a category or an item).
