Families, parents and guardians
Screen: a student's profile. Who: the owner manages; the instructor sees names, without contact details.
Principles
- A family groups students (siblings, a parent and children). School messages and reminders go to one email per family: the main contact's (if they have no email, the next parent in the list who has one). An adult student with their own email receives it at their address. See the Messages article.
- Parents and guardians belong to the family. The first one in the list is the main contact; the profile says so ("main contact").
- A minor always has a family. It is created automatically when the minor is added. For a minor, the school only communicates with their parents or guardians.
- A parent can be a person entered by hand (name, relationship, email, phone) or an adult student at the school: their contact details then come from their own profile, and Open their profile leads there. The profile says "student at the school".
- A minor cannot be a parent or guardian.
- A parent entered by hand needs at least a name or an email.
Adding a parent or guardian
- On the child's profile, Parents and guardians block, tap Add a parent or guardian.
- Choose A person (then fill in first name, last name, email, phone) or A student at the school (then search for the adult student and select them).
- Enter the Relationship (Mother, Father, Guardian…).
- Tap Add.
The new parent is added at the end of the list.
Managing a parent
Tap the ⋮ button to the right of the parent:
- Edit: name, relationship, email, phone. For a parent who is a student, only the relationship is edited here; their contact details are edited on their own profile.
- Make main contact: moves them to the top of the list.
- Remove: moves them to the trash; Undo is offered for 7 seconds. If they were the main contact, the next parent becomes main contact automatically.
Managing the family
In the block bearing the family's name:
- Rename: changes the family's name.
- Change family: choose an existing family at the school, or create a new one.
- Remove from family: adults only (a minor must stay in a family).
- For an adult without a family: Add to a family.
Grouping siblings: open the second child's profile, tap Change family and choose the first child's family. That family's parents then apply to both. If the old family has no members left, its parents follow the child (at the end of the list, without duplicates: a parent already there, same email or same profile, has their duplicate moved to the trash) and it disappears from the lists. Removing an adult from a family where they were the last member moves that family's parents to the trash (recoverable for 30 days). A family whose students have all been deleted for good is erased along with its parents.
Family members are shown with their role (Parent or Child) and their groups.
