Install the app on the home screen

Who: owner and instructor, on each of their devices (phone, tablet or computer).

Martialnote is a web app: it opens in the browser, and you can also install it to have it on the home screen like an app. Once installed, it opens with one tap on its icon, full screen, without an address bar. Nothing to download from the App Store or Google Play; updates happen on their own. The data stays the same: it is the same account and the same school as in the browser.

Where to find it

• In the menu: the Install the app button, under Help. It looks like an outlined button, not a menu entry. It opens the "Install the app" screen (address /install, with a back arrow to Today). The button does not appear when the app is already opened from its icon (installed app).
• After setup: once Open my school is tapped (or one of the next steps of the Ready step), the app opens on the chosen screen. About 5 seconds later, a centered window "Martialnote on your home screen" explains the installation and shows the instructions for the device (phone, tablet or computer). Later closes it; once the app is installed, the button becomes Close. This window appears only once, right after setup: it does not come back on its own (then use Install the app in the menu). It does not appear if the app is already installed, if the "Install the app" screen is already open, if another window is open at that moment, or if the page is reloaded or left before the delay.

How to install

The screen shows the instructions that fit the device:

• Android (Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet) and computer (Chrome, Edge): often an Install Martialnote button. Tapping it opens the browser's install window; confirm with Install. If you cancel it, the message "Installation cancelled…" appears and the button may disappear for a while: the browser decides when it offers it again. You can then use the browser menu (below).
• iPhone and iPad: no button can install the app for you (Apple's rule).
  1. Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow pointing up): at the bottom of the screen in Safari, in the address bar in Chrome or Edge.
  2. Scroll and tap Add to Home Screen.
  3. Tap Add.
• Android without a button (Firefox, or button already used): browser menu (the three dots ⋮), then Install app or Add to Home screen, then confirm.
• Computer without a button: Chrome or Edge, install icon at the right of the address bar or browser menu > Install Martialnote (in Edge: Apps); Safari on Mac, File menu > Add to Dock. Firefox cannot install a website on a computer: use Chrome, Edge or Safari.
• Another app's built-in browser (link opened from Facebook, Instagram…): installing is not possible there. Open the page in the real browser (menu ⋮ or ···, then "Open in browser"), then Install the app in the menu.

Once the app is installed, the screen shows "Martialnote is installed on this device".

Rules and limits

• Installing applies to one device and one browser: do it again on each device.
• Installing changes nothing about the account, the school or the data; you stay signed in as in the browser. The first opening of the installed app may ask you to sign in again (link by email), especially on iPhone and iPad.
• There is no Martialnote app in the App Store or Google Play.
• Uninstall: like any other app (long-press the icon, then Remove or Uninstall). Nothing is erased from the school: the data is on Martialnote's servers.
• Offline attendance works the same way in the installed app and in the browser (see the article "Taking attendance without a connection").
